Clay County, named for Henry Clay, officially came into existence from part of Duval County on December 31, 1858 from portions of Alachua, Columbia and Duval counties. However, the area had been inhabited for thousands of years. Various Indian cultures, dating back to at least 5,000 B.C., lived and thrived on the banks of the St. Johns River. Europeans discovered the area as early as 1562.
Clay County is the home of Camp Blanding Army Reserve Training Center. The Gold Head Branch Florida State Park is also located here. The county seat is Green Cove Springs. Other towns in Clay County are Orange Park, Middleburg, Penny Farms and Keystone Heights. Major communities include Doctors Inlet, Clay Hill, Lake Geneva, and Maxville.
The FlGenWeb Project currently has opportunities for Volunteers in Clay County. We are seeking a County Coordinator and possibly an Assistant County Coordinator to maintain the Clay County Website. The County Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator are responsible for coordinating the placement of material on the website. Ideally, this person or persons would live in the Clay County area or have strong ties to the area, have the ability to promote interest among the communities and organizations to assist with data placement. Please contact the State Coordinator if you are interested in becoming a County Coordinator for Clay County or any other FLGenWeb County in need of adoption.
Local volunteers are needed to index and transcribe records, survey cemeteries and update existing cemetery transcriptions, act as look-up volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a Clay County Volunteer, or have data, family history narratives, military records, photographs or other ephemera you would like to have displayed on this website, please contact the temporary coordinator via the CONTACT PAGE.
